Movember

This is post number one. Day one of my epic journey to do my part to eliminate prostate cancer. How, you might ask, am I planning to accomplish such an auspicious goal?

By growing a mustache, of course.

I had heard of Movember last year, but unfortunately it was too late for me to join. I vowed that this year, I would make up for it. So, starting today, my upper lip shall remain unshorn for the next 30 days. Take that prostate cancer. How you like me now?

Movember began in 2003 in Australia, when a few friends were talking (over beers, of course) about bringing back the 1970s' greatest contribution to men's style while simultaneously raising awareness for men's health issues. They raised no money that year, but the next year, nearly 500 men joined in and raised $55,000 for research and prevention.

In the years since, Movember has spread across oceans and continents. Last year, more than 255,000 people participated, raising $42 million for research. This year, more than 32,000 men will die of prostate cancer and related illness. So this year, I'm growing a 'stache.

Movember works a lot like a marathon for charity. I grow a mustache and ask for donations. I endure the itching, the mockery, the humiliation and you donate money to charity via my Mo Space page on movember.com. But every good runner knows that running alone is not nearly as effective as running with partners - at least that's what I've heard runners say when they pass by the hot dog stand where I eat. So if you would like to join the ManoftheHouse.com Movember team, send me an e-mail: craig@manofthehouse.com.

In the mean time, visit the official Movember page to learn how you can contribute, how men's health issues are impacting the lives of thousands of men around the world and what we can do to make a difference. And stop back next week, when I post a photo of my progress.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a cancerous dragon to slay with the power of my stubble.

Craig Heimbuch cannot grow facial hair to save his life, but he will grow it to save other people's. He is the Editor-in-Chief of ManoftheHouse.com and a Barefoot Proximity employee.
