Is Your Child Ready for Potty Training?

I don’t want to be one of those dads who brags about how his kid can write his name by three or can find Kazakhstan on a map by two, but toilet training my son wasn’t hard--surely a sign that he is supernaturally gifted.

We started the process when he was three, and while some of our friends and family managed to tackle the task earlier, we waited. We thought we had a breakthrough when he would sit on the potty at two, but in the midst of a move and the birth of his new brother, we couldn't keep up with reinforcing the habit. So we waited.

However, we did keep talking to him about peeing on the potty. We’d ask him if he wanted to go. We’d tell him he could go. We’d remind him that big boys go on the potty and showed him the cute "big boy underwear" that awaited him when he mastered this skill.

Close to his third birthday he was at the point where he would tell us immediately after something happened, and after about two weeks of conversations he slowly began to tell us before it happened. In the year since, we’ve only had two accidents, and he’s at the point where he will get up in the middle of the night to pee on his own.

Alicia M. I had my son sit to pee also. We actually had him sit facing the back of the toilet so there was more room. Worked brilliantly. He stands now, but it was really helpful at the beginning. - 04/07/2011
