9 Tips for Managing Your Kids' Extracurricular Activities

Baseball. Soccer. Ballet. Piano. Kids are under more pressure than ever to participate in extracurricular activities, and there are more options available than when we were in school. But all those activities can overload your child's schedule—and yours too. So, how does the modern dad manage his children's activities? Here are nine tips for keeping things under control.
1. Set limits
It might not make you popular with your kids, but it will keep you sane. Not only will setting limits allow you to more effectively balance work, play and family, but also it will ensure your kids take time to be kids, rather than constantly running off to a game or practice.
2. Strike a balance
There are different types of extracurricular activities. Some, such as sports, are extremely physical, while others, such as playing an instrument, are more mentally challenging. If your kids want to take part in several activities, encourage them to find a balance between the mental and physical so they don't wear themselves out.
3. Share the load
If you and your spouse both work, it's important to share the duties regarding your kids' extracurricular activities. Sit down with your calendars and determine who is available when. If you can't figure out who will take your kids to soccer practice or debate club meetings, you might need to help them scale back.
