11 Tips on Caring for Your Dog

I’ve got a philosophy about canines that goes beyond the old “’Dog’ is ‘God’ spelled backward.” I think that the older you get, the more you can appreciate them.

***SOAPBOX ALERT***

My belief has less to do with your age than with what you learn about people over the years. True, there are billions of nice people. But there are others who disappoint you, lie to you, steal from you. People who display pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth. People who are in control of their own destinies but continually blow it with bad choices.

Dogs have none of these flaws. They’re born with a love for humans. In fact, I believe that bad dogs are made that way by owners who are either idiotic, evil or both.

Our canine pals are totally devoted to us. They provide love, guard our homes and families, and they’re always overjoyed to see us when we come home. They never hold grudges, even when we screw up.

If dogs had opposable thumbs, they’d probably even clean the house and pick up after themselves. But they can’t, so here are some quick suggestions to help you make life with your dog more harmonious, to collar canine clutter and to keep your pet safer.

  • Keep leash, pickup bags (for the bodily excretion commonly known as poop) and a paw-cleaning towel near the door, always ready for walks and their aftermath.
  • Reuse plastic shopping bags for pickups. You can store them in an empty tissue box for one-at-a-time dispensing.
  • Instead of wrestling with humungous bags of dog food, divvy it up into smaller, sealable containers for storage. This keeps pests out, too.
  • Assign toys to baskets or bins, where you can quickly toss things when you want to declutter the room.
