9 Reasons Why Men Should Learn to Cook

There are lots of reasons why men should learn how to cook and only few of them are related to meeting women. I haven’t always been as into cooking as I am now, but learning how to cook has helped me learn a lot about myself.

When I first got started I kept things pretty basic. Even though I feel I’m pretty good now, I’m confident that Eric Ripert won’t be calling me anytime soon to offer me a job in his kitchen. Still, some of the best times I have with friends and family are when we all get together and I cook for them.

You don’t need to go to school or make any major investments to learn on your own. All you need to be is a little adventurous and not be too hard on yourself when you inevitably screw something up. And, of course, watching a little Food Network can’t hurt.

Still not convinced to sharpen that knife? Then here are my top nine reasons why men should learn how to cook.

Eric B. I love cooking for my family. It's awesome. And yes, it helped me get the girl. These are all great reasons. Nice post! - 01/25/2011
Chopper P. Or, forbid, a man ever became single again it'd keep him from starving to death. Such as myself, learning to cook was a literal matter of life and death. chopperpapa.com - 01/21/2011
Otter T. You left out my number one reason. I like to eat. If I learn to cook what I like then I am assured to be able to eat good food. Cost is a big one too. I like creativity as well. Cooking is one of the few places in life that I am creative. I am normally a typical engineer. Things go by the book and follow rules and laws. In the kitchen I almost never use a recipe. I just have a feel, and I'm not afraid to screw things up. It is perhaps what I love most about cooking. I hate recipes. I like to experiment. Of course I have to be careful because ultimately my wife still has to eat this stuff. Great post as always Chef PJ. - 01/21/2011
Chef Todd M. I'm a career-changer who went from novice at-home cook to culinary school graduate and Executive Chef. I've taught thousands of men HOW to cook using basic cooking methods. If your Mom or Grandma didn't teach you to cook, you're unfortunately left to recipe books and celebrity chefs on TV. The problem is neither of these actually teach you HOW to cook. The Food Network is the MTV of Food. MTV used to play music, now they're entertainment ABOUT music. The Food Network is entertainment ABOUT food, they don't teach anyone to cook. Neither will you learn how to cook from a book. Written recipes won't teach you to cook any more than having sheet music will teach you to play piano. There are too many variables in recipes that always lead to frustration. The best way to free yourself from recipes and cook like a chef at home is to examine the basic cooking methods. When you learn HOW to saute, broil, grill, roast, then you can create your own recipes from what you have on hand. Knowing HOW to cook anything is a skill that will save you time, money at the grocery store, improve your health, reunite your family over dinner, eat a greater variety of foods, and have this skill for the rest of your life.
