Stadium Food Recipes to Cook at Home

There are some things about a sports stadium that are hard to replicate anyplace else. The overall experience is charged with intense emotions, the taste buds seem to be heightened and the snacks and foods that are normally served taste extra special. But you can score a touchdown (or hit a home run) with some traditional stadium recipes at your game-night parties and take a shot at making them healthier too.

Traditional ballpark fare, of course, includes peanuts and Crackerjacks, as well as hot dogs, pretzels, nachos, pizza, popcorn and snow cones. Here are some suggestions for a three-course stadium meal served right in your living room.

APPETIZERS

You can begin the Big Game meal with the standard favorites, such as chips and dip, popcorn or chex mix, but here are a couple of special treats: smoked sausage kebabs (a deconstruction of the traditional hot dog) and seasoned peanut mix (a spicy variation on regular roasted peanuts).

Smoked Sausage Kebabs

Ingredients:

  • 450g (1 lb.) sausage meat (veggie sausages can be used if you prefer)
  • 425g pack fresh prepared pineapple
  • 2 tbsp. malt vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. light brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp. tomato ketchup
  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika
  • Pinch of salt, rosemary and curry powder
  • 1 red pepper, scalded
  • 1 yellow pepper, scalded

Directions:

  • Blend brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, paprika, rosemary and curry powder in a shallow dish and add the sausages, turning to coat well.
  • Cover and place in the fridge to marinate (leave for at least 15 minutes or up to one hour). Preheat the barbecue or grill to its highest setting.
  • Thread three sausages onto each skewer, alternating with the pineapple pieces and green and red pepper.
  • Cook for 15-20 minutes, turning regularly and basting with any remaining marinade.

Tip: If you like your hot dogs with cheese, then add a cube or two to your kebabs to suit your taste.

Makes 10 kebabs.
