7 Ways to Eat Healthy on the Road

7 Ways to Eat Healthy on the Road

Like most people, I like to choose the easy way. Blow the leaves instead of rake them. A quick text instead of a long call. Heck, I even use the volume controls on my steering wheel rather than reaching the foot and a half to the dashboard.

So, it's not surprising to me that, despite my efforts to stay healthy, I sometimes fall victim to the ease of eating quickly and mindlessly while on the go.

Traveling, whether on business or for pleasure, takes away the routines at home, and somewhat disables your ability to control things, especially food. Rather than a refrigerator full of good choices and the time to make them, you face menu boards with enticing yet belt-busting foods. Quickness and efficiency become paramount and usually trump health.

But does it have to be this way? No, not really.

We all need to remember that what we put into our bodies determines so much, from how we look to how we feel, both physically and emotionally. And we must also know that we control it all. Just because the golden arches of McDonalds rise on the horizon just off the highway doesn't mean that you have to be one of the "over a billion" served.

Being away from home doesn't mean you have to put your healthy lifestyle on pause. You can still make quality choices and keep a level of discipline and willpower.

Here's how I try when I have to hit the road for a bit.

Kevin H. Somewhat misleading title, article seemed more like what not to do at anytime! As someone who travels for days at a time, road-eating has become my norm. Instead of fast-food restaurants, I stop by grocery stores and buy fresh fruits/vegetables. Few restaurants have healthy selections, Jason's Deli being a favorite of mine. A little planning ahead works wonders as well, like packing a few small snack-packs of nuts, baby carrots, apple wedges, etc. For driving vacations, pack a cooler with picnic-style sandwich ingredients, iced tea, juice, and/or water. - 03/13/2011
