Homemade French Fries Without the “Fried”

Homemade French Fries Without the “Fried”

Everyone loves French fries. The texture, the taste, the smell...they're delicious. Too bad they're not the healthiest food, and if you're trying to cut back on grease, deep-fried french fries have to go.

Fortunately, there are other options. If you've got an oven and a little time, these tips can help you make your own healthier french fries.

Break Out the Olive Oil

After cutting your potatoes into French fry sticks, it's time for oil—good oil. Coating your fries with olive oil makes them crisper and adds flavor. Sure, you could use canola, vegetable or peanut oil, but olive oil is better for you and adds a delicious flavor. Don't worry about going with extra virgin olive oil as it's expensive and is best suited for salad dressings. Regular olive oil is fine.

Seasoning

Oven french fries have another leg up on french fries—since you're making them at home you can season them how you want. Cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and even herbs like basil and rosemary are well suited to oven fries. Avoid black pepper until the end of the baking as it tends to burn. Mix and match seasonings to your preference. Add salt to taste after it comes out of the oven.

Zoe G. Another trick I like to do is use gently crushed foil. This works similiar to insulated baking sheets and the clean up is minimal. I like to use the non-stick foil as it can be washed and reused a few more times. Also, it doesn't hurt to pre cook your potatoes in the microwave after you've cut them. Cool them down some in cold water and pat dry then bake. Frozen French frys are literally twice cooked; quick fry at the factory and then again at home. - 09/27/2011
