New Life for the PB&J Sandwich

New Life for the PB&J Sandwich

Like a glass of ice cold milk and that classic chocolate cream cookie, peanut butter and jelly (PB&J) will never go out of style. But it does get a little tired – and your kids will tell you when it does. Here are some easy alternatives that still honor the tradition of the original.

Remove the PB...

Tahini, almond butter, cashew butter and macadamia nut butter are all great substitutions for your classic peanut butter. They all have rich, entirely different flavors from one another and are a nice addition to a sandwich. You might find that you actually enjoy one of these substitutions better than your fall back jar of Jif. Not to mention, some of these alternatives - namely tahini - are safe for those with peanut allergies.

Side note: Tahini is a "butter" created from sesame seeds. They can either be raw or roasted, both of which are distinct flavors. Tahini is commonly used in hummus and is popular in Middle Eastern cuisine – you'll find it in most large supermarkets or health food stores.

...Or Remove the J

If you've never had the pleasure of biting into a peanut butter sandwich with bananas, fresh sliced strawberries or lightly crushed raspberries, you're missing out. What about other fruits? Try thinly sliced apples, blueberries, blackberries or diced peaches. When the fruits are in season, sub out your jelly for a while and make fresh fruit sandwiches while you can.
Want to try something without fruit all together? A drizzle of honey over the peanut butter is delicious if you're looking for something a little less fruity and a little sweeter.

Shed the Bread

Biscuits, English muffins, flour tortillas, leftover pancakes, slices of angel food cake and even rice cakes are superb substitutions for bread. These are all great substitutions if you're craving a PB&J, but not looking for your boring ol' slice of white or wheat.

Keep reading if you absolutely must have the bread.
