13 Best Gifts for Dad: Leica V-LUX 20

Leica V-LUX 20 Digital Camera

Last year, my wife complained about how bulky and unwieldy our Canon Rebel DSLR was – she didn’t like carrying the camera bag and the size made it hard for her to throw it in the diaper bag and go. I scoffed, of course, believing that the Canon was the only route to digital happiness. Still, I bought her a Lumix pocket camera and the results have been bliss. The problem is that now I want to be able to throw a camera in my bag and forget about it until it is needed without sacrificing photo quality. I think I have finally found a compact camera that meets my needs – the Leica V-LUX 20. At 12.1, it’s got 20 percent more megapixels than my six year-old Canon, a 3” LCD screen (also bigger than my Canon) and is compact enough to have a permanent home in my bag where it waits for memories to happen. As the secondary memory officer in the family, I hope to capture lots of pics of our three kids, but as a writer, traveler and editor, I can see this thing working out pretty well for work too.

Jeff P. Larry B - nothing wrong with your gift suggestions either. We understand every Dad has certain tastes. Larry F - we hope you had a Merry Christmas as well. I'm sure being with your family is a special enough gift. Will H - appreciate the comment on the megapixels. I don't think you'll see any of our photos hanging in a gallery anytime soon, but maybe on our personal blogs. :) - 12/28/2010
Will H. I'm sorry, but unless it's double the megapixels you aren't going to see a significant difference. It shouldn't be a selling point. However, I'll agree that any point and shoot that's fairly recent will rank in as better for the average dad than a DSLR. And this is coming from a photographer. Being able to pull out a camera from your jacket pocket and capture your kids and family in decent quality and then share the images is much more important than the artistic things you can do by swapping out lenses and playing with the aperture and ISO. - 12/27/2010
Larry F. Being disabled I havent decided what I wanted for Xmas but for my kids to get what they wanted. Unfortunately not having the money to buy anything makes you feel even worse when you cant give the kids what they want. I hope everyone had a Merry Xmas. I can say that I had a good one At least I am still alive for the time being - 12/26/2010
Larry B. Sorry, I'm a dad of 25+ years, and I didn't like any of them until 8-9, and then no more until 13. What happened to good old-fashioned Lakers/Kings/Clippers[?]/Dux [do the Rams still play here?] tix or a gift certificate @ some casino in Vegas? After-shave is still nice as long as it's Dolce & Gabbana - 12/23/2010
Ron G. This is made by Panasonic FOR Leica. Get a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 for a lot less money. You won't get the fancy red logo. No other difference. - 12/15/2010
Greg J. you are a lame tool. horrible taste in music and corny suggestions for everything. what a doofus. i'm a grown up now. and you have tacky, dumb taste. like a poor mans details magazine list. tool. - 12/14/2010
