Are You Addicted to Groupon?

Every time I log in to check our bank accounts, I notice another Groupon purchase. Weekly, sometimes daily, charges from Groupon – did I get hacked? Oh right. My wife has a serious addiction to spending money in order to save money. It’s bordering on obsession.

In case you haven’t yet been formally introduced, Groupon is a site that features a daily deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat and buy in more than 300 markets and 35 countries. It usually goes something like-spend $30 now, and get a coupon for $130 worth of hot yoga classes … which according to my wife is A. REALLY. GOOD. DEAL.

And I hate to break it to you, dude, but your wife or girlfriend is probably also addicted to Groupon, and you probably don’t even know it yet. Symptoms may include: buying “Groupons” to places or things she’s never even heard of, competing against her friends to see who can hold the title of “most Groupons purchased” and mild depression when she misses a good Groupon.

It’s not only women though. More and more men are catching the fever. Here’s a real video made by Groupon that was to have aired during the last Super Bowl but didn’t make the cut. Even the marketing geniuses at Groupon know that people are addicted. I think it’s great that they can poke fun at themselves:

Slick D. You missed the best site for combining all of these... slickdeals.net. The site not only aggregates all the deal sites into one, but it originally was a forum for finding great deals online. - 06/28/2011
Buzz B. Not a fan of Groupon's ethics or the constant churn of yoga, pilates and latte offers. When the coupons have more variety and personalization (can you say Pandora for coupons?) then I'll be more excited, right now it's more of a chore to find the 1 deal a month that appeals to me or my wife. - 03/18/2011
