App of the Week: Cards

There’s something charmingly archaic about writing a message in a card. You’re constrained by space and, if you’re actually writing a heartfelt message, words must be chosen carefully.
Apple’s Cards app will not get you addicted. It’s not a time killer, and you probably won’t wonder how you lived without it. But what it does is create a completely customizable card from the photo on the outside to the printed text on the inside. The app will also allow you to choose a person from your address book to send it to. There’s no physical handling of the card itself—from start to finish, it’s done on the app.
I’m not sure how many times a typical man purchases cards in a year. When I do, though, it’s for a damn good reason because I hate that aisle in stores. And if it’s already for a damn good reason, I want a damn good card.
So what’s the point? When it comes to something that can be as personal as a card (which are not only for birthdays), taking time to "design" one and compose an original message on the inside can say a lot. Also, while I’m not endorsing this, there is no better way to subtly remind a friend of his own embarrassing antics than sending him a card with a photo of, well, himself on it. Prepare to burn some bridges.
Cards is a free app, but the entire process (including postage, production and shipping) costs $3.99 within the U.S. and $4.99 to send anywhere else.
