The Best Fishing Gear to Catch the Big One
April 14, 2011, By Jean Scheid 0 comments
Growing up with the three rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with access to over 60 bridges and fishing sites all around, I had many fun times in spring and summer with my dad. Back in those days, the latest fishing gear was available at local hardware stores and, frankly, was pretty much all the same.
These days, the new stuff is not your father’s fishing gear. Here’s a look at some of the best new stuff on the market that is both functional and affordable.
Cabela’s
If you're not yet a fan of Cabela’s, known as the World’s Foremost Outfitter, check them out. One order from Cabela’s guarantees you their hard-to-put-down Spring/Summer catalog full of all you need to catch that big one. Here are some of my favorites.
- Sienna/Cabela’s Pro Guide Spinning Rod Combo. With five models ranging from seven to 13 ounces, all priced at $55, these new rod combos are great for all ages and all levels of fishing experience. The propulsion line management system offers longer casts with no backplay and promises no wobble during retrieves. This cold-forged aluminum spool- and-rod combo has been upgraded to offer improved sensitivity, graphite reel seats, and padded hoods for a secure hold. This spinning rod combo also comes with a two-year warranty.
- Hard & Soft Baits. I'm also a fan of their lineup of hard and soft baits. For hard baits, try the SPRO Little John Crankbait, endorsed by professional angler John Crews. At just under $12 and available in ten colors, it will tempt any fish with the two dangling treble. For soft baits, try the Sebile Magic Swimmer. Available in six colors and two sizes (4-inch and 5 1/8 inch), these baits provide weedless performance and molded hook holes.·
- Storage Gear. Cabela’s Advanced Angler StormProof Series Bags come in three sizes to hold all your fishing gear safe and in one place. Priced from $40 to $99, these storage bags are made of heavy-duty tarpaulin with a hard plastic bottom to keep out the moisture. Available in large, extra-large and super-magnum size, you’ll find the bag to fit your fishing needs this summer.
