5 Tips for Saving Money on Kids Sports Gear

If you have one or more children involved in some type of school-related sport or extra-curricular activity, then you know that along with participation fees typically comes a hefty price tag for the required equipment. Here are some tips for buying sporting gear for kids designed to help you save money along the way.

1. Shop a Season Ahead

If you can, try to take advantage of clearance sales by shopping a year or, at the very least, a season ahead. If you know that in a year your child will most likely need hockey skates that are the next size up, shop the after-Christmas sales to find discounted merchandise. The same holds true at the end of summer, when you are likely to find discounts or sales on gear for swimming, tennis, baseball and golf.

2. Check the Listings

Rummage sales, eBay and Craigslist offer great opportunities to purchase used, or sometimes even new, sporting gear. In this approach, diligence pays off. Check listings frequently for the best deals. Another idea is to enlist the help of family and friends. Furnish them each with a pocket- or purse-sized card featuring the list of sports items you want. Be sure to include specific details, like the sizes and how much you are willing to spend. You may not be in the right place at the right time—but they might!

Chuck M. Great article! I have bought some great stuff at used sporting goods stores for the kids, and for myself. Spend a couple of bucks on restringing an old baseball glove, or a new grip on that composite baseball bat the kids wanted, and they are good as new. And if you get a decent used glove, you don't need to spend the time trying to break it in. - 11/17/2011
