Dad Stuff: Kurt Cobain Guitar

Back in the '90s, a lot of guys dreamed of being Kurt Cobain—without the drug habit and Courtney Love, of course. He was the definitive rocker, the embodiment of passionate rebellion who rose to the top of the music industry without compromising. No pretty-boy media darling, he was the real deal. Who wouldn't want to emulate his success, his artistic purity, his popularity with all the girls you knew?
Twenty years later, we have wives, kids, mortgages and careers, and only now and then get a little wistful for what might have been. Guitar maker Fender has tapped into those long lost dreams with their new signature model Kurt Cobain Jaguar, bringing it out to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana's game-changing album "Nevermind." According to the company's website, they have "reproduced Cobain’s battle-hardened left-handed Jaguar down to the last unusual detail, including its worn finish, dual humbucking pickups and unique electronics and controls."
Though most of us remember Cobain sporting a Sonic Blue "Jag-Stang," a special hybrid of the Jaguar and Mustang, Fender chose to go with their traditional Jaguar in a Sunburst finish, which he did, in fact, play frequently. By the time he died, Cobain played a number of Jaguars in various colors.
If you're not a lefty like Kurt, you can order a right-handed version. At $1,819.99, it's a pricey toy, no question. It's what marketers rather euphemistically refer to as "aspirational." We aspire to have the cash that would allow for such an indulgence, just as we aspired to be a Rock God like Cobain when we were 15. If you stopped taking those guitar lessons after a month or two, you probably won't want to plunk for a guitar quite so expensive. Still, if you somehow land an unexpected windfall, there aren't too many cooler ways to spend it.
