Family Video Games for Kids: Lego Games

When cold weather sets in, the family that plays together, stays together. So today we’ve created a wish list of titles the whole family can enjoy. Don’t let the cutesy graphics and technicolor palettes fool you. All of these games have a solid feel to them and are fun to play. As one might expect, this list is dominated by Nintendo and the Wii but there are plenty of worthy games for other consoles.
LEGO Games
$15.99 - $49.99; Wii, PS3, Xbox 360
Just like the bricks themselves, the Lego series of games look all cute and colorful, but if you actually sit down and play with them with kids, you’ll find yourself having a blocky ball!
Also nice about this series - all the games are pretty decent, which means you can shop the bargain bin for Lego Batman or Indiana Jones (released in 2008) or Lego Indiana Jones 2 or Lego Rock Band (released in 2009). The newest console title, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, came out in June this year, but remains fresh and relevant as the movie series draws to a climactic close between now and 2011.
All of the titles can be played single player, but cooperative mode is where they really shine. I mean, how can it not be fun running around as a cute little Lego Chewie or Princess Lea, solving puzzles that require teamwork, blasting storm troopers with your Lego laser gun or swapping out the Lego heads and torsos of characters to create your own heroes?
Developer Traveller’s Tales does a great job capturing the iconic sounds, music, items and characters of the famous franchises, while retaining many of the elements that have made Lego brick such a unique toy for decades and then animating it all into great gaming experiences.
Next game: Kinectimals
