The Top 10 Fitness Apps for Athletes

The convenience of having fitness apps on your smartphone is hard to beat. However, these apps for athletes are about more than just accessibility. They include all the important features you need to maximize the results you get from your fitness regime. Here are ten of the best.

  1. Nike+ GPS (iPhone) - The Nike+ app has been a perennial favorite for iPhone users for some time now. It has a built-in GPS module that maps your runs and records your pace. You hear motivational messages from some of Nike's top athletes and can easily share your times with Facebook, Twitter or Nikeplus.com. Use this app with friends and you can even play a game of Nike+ Tag!
  2. Livestrong.com Calorie Tracker (iPhone/Blackberry) - Every athlete knows that good nutrition is just as important as exercise. The Livestrong app has a huge database of grocery store foods and restaurant meals to help you know exactly what you are eating. You can set your own daily calorie targets and weight goals, or browse through the 2000 fitness activities that can keep you on track to meet your goals.
  3. C25K (iPhone/Android) - If you haven't been exercising for a while, the Couch to 5K, (C25K), app may be just what you need. In just nine weeks you can build up your strength and stamina with a carefully designed exercise program that has you running three days a week. It's a great way to see quick results.
  4. B.iCycle (iPhone/Android) - Not all apps for athletes are geared to runners. B.iCycle, for example, is perfect for cyclists who ride on and off road. The built-in GPS tracks your current speed, average speed, maximum speed, trip distance, altitude and more. Maps are also included so you don't get lost, and they feature POIs, bike trails, contour lines and more.
  5. Gym Goal (iPhone) - If you spend a lot of time in the gym, you may well grow to love the feature-packed Gym Goal app. You can create your own routine from the lineup of 280 exercises, log your results, set goals, target individual muscles and track your cardio performance.

Taylor O. You should look at the mindbody fitness app- they have it for both iphone and android. its a class finder app for yoga, pilates, and fitness- so you can see the schedules of all the studios near you all over the country. I use it when I travel so I can sign up for a yoga class or try a spin class at a studio near by. you can share what classes you want to take on facebook and twitter too so your friends can go with you. it's pretty sweet. - 06/09/2011
@Nolimitstweets B. Thank you for the recommendations - will be definitely checking them out. - 05/08/2011
Larry D. Livestrong is TERRIBLE. I was a Gold Member at Livestrong for 2 years and they've really sat on their laurels and done little to improve their tools. I started using Dailyburn a few months ago and it is much much better than Livestrong. - 04/22/2011
Don M. Another great App is "Couch to 5k" - 04/21/2011
