5 Ways to Look Better Than You Did 10 Years Ago

I made a fundamental mistake thirty minutes ago. Just before I was about to sit down and pull together the research I had been collecting for this article, I thought it would be fun to grab an old photograph of myself from ten years ago and compare it to my current mug.
And I’ve now wasted the last half hour sitting at my computer going back and forth between the two familiar faces. Both are me, for sure. But in an odd, uncomfortable way, they feel like two very different men.
- The younger me is the pre-cancer guy. If he only knew what journey was about to rattle his life.
- The older me is the “found-myself-alone-raising-three-kids-model.” Not quite the image the younger me would have ever dreamed. But you float with the punches.
- Both versions are the bald me. Although I think I’m happier with the shaved head special.
- The younger me could barely run a mile. The older me has a couple (slow) marathons and triathlons under his belt. I like that part of getting older. It’s nice to not worry about how well you do and just enjoy the experience.
- The younger me had a flourishing career, a regular paycheck and great benefits. The older guy is following his passion and just trying to make a difference in the world.
- And, what I’m realizing the most is that the older Jim is also the happier Jim.
Does he look better than ten years ago? Hell if I know. So much has happened in the last decade. My focus has been on health. And wellness. Cancer has a funny way of doing that. The new version of me obsesses over what goes in my mouth, what I drink, and my daily potpourri of supplements and medications. I recognize that stress distracts from important things. So I try to tend to my emotional health. And yes, I like yoga.
