Garage Organization Ideas

Ready to waste another glorious weekend doing the worst job ever created: cleaning out the garage? It doesn't have to be. Cleaning and organizing your garage once is all it takes, if you do it right. (Sorry, but you're still going to lose a weekend.)

  • Choose a rain-free day to spread everything outside. Sweep out your garage first, but never rinse it out with a hose. Water can easily seep into the home through the slab.
  • Organize your garbage. Put hazardous materials, such as old paints and expired chemicals, aside to take to the local landfill or other specially designated areas. Recyclables and garbage go in another pile. Put the rest in two piles, keepers and goners.
  • Consider purchasing a small shed for garden and lawn equipment. You can get one delivered for cheaper than you think.
  • Find a storage unit. They can be had for reasonable monthly rates. Seasonal items, such as holiday decorations and winter clothes, are perfect for storage units.
  • If you haven't used it in over three years; chuck it. Better yet, recycle it on Craigslist or Freecycle.
