Garage Storage Solutions & Car Cleaning Tips

This is a follow-up to the earlier Garage Rehab column, which described the broad strokes of cleaning this space—an area only slightly less sacred than your man cave—after a long, hard winter.

Now here’s a tips-rich lineup of “extra credit” suggestions for ongoing maintenance and storage, plus a few thoughts about keeping your car clean.

The Garage

  • Use an old dresser to organize and store everything from tools, nuts and bolts to tiles, gloves and sports gear. The drawers keep everything at hand, and the top can double as a workbench.

  • If your walls have exposed vertical 2x4 studs, use them. Cut and nail lengths of 2x4s between them horizontally to create “recessed” shelving. Each mini-shelf will be only 3 1/2” deep, but that’s enough room to store things like cans of spray paint, jars of nails or screws, small tools and more. And everything is very visible.
  • Install pegboard. With a variety-pack of hooks from the hardware store, it’s ideal for hanging garden tools, bungee cords, levels, tools or whatever else you need to get out of the way. You can be even more organized by drawing a magic-marker outline of each item around it on the pegboard, so you know exactly where it goes.

  • If you have kids or pets, think about adding a lockable cabinet for lawn and garden chemicals. It doesn’t have to be fancy… just secure.
  • Big car, small garage? Once you have your vehicle positioned the way you want it, attach a tennis ball to a string and hang it so the ball just touches your windshield. You’ll never ram into the front wall or close the garage door on your rear bumper again.
