5 Home Security Tips

Whether you live alone in a third-floor walk-up downtown or you've just purchased a house in the suburbs for your burgeoning family, home security is nothing to leave to chance. Since it is usually the small details that result in vulnerability to predators, the man of the house must be meticulous in identifying weaknesses.
Home Alone
Real men can take care of themselves, it's true, but real men also use their brains and available technology to keep themselves and their families safe. You can't be on alert 24/7, so recognize your limitations.
When you are home alone (or with your family), the goal is to create a safe atmosphere. Close blinds, shutters and other window treatments so nobody can see inside. Coat other doors and windows with frost or semi-opaque contact paper. This will prevent anyone from seeing inside your home without compromising the availability of natural light. Avoid going outside after dark unless you have invested in landscape or path lighting.
Setting Alarms
Burglar alarms are excellent investments in home security—if they work. Faulty wiring or poor setup can cause your alarm system to go off randomly when you aren't at home, immunizing your neighbors against the sound. Then, if someone actually does break in, the people around you will think nothing of the resulting alarm.
Make sure your home security alarm is actually subscribed to a security service and try to conduct maintenance on an annual basis. Verifying that motion sensors and keypads still work is a simple step that can save your life.
