Know How: Recaulking a Bathtub

Know How: Recaulking a Bathtub

My wife asked me a month ago to replace the caulk around our master bathtub, so, of course, I just got to it a couple of days ago. She was out of town with the kids and gently reminded me that it might be a good time for me to get on that long overdue project. There was just one problem—I had no idea how to replace caulk around a bathtub.

I started with the guys at the local big box hardware store and got a ton of information. Too much. I had no idea if they were giving the recipe for their grandmother's peanut butter cookies or instructions for constructing homemade ballistic missiles. I went home with two bags full of things I didn't understand and the certain knowledge that I was no closer to knowing what was ahead of me than I was before I left the couch.

I was smart enough to know I didn't know, so I took to the internet and read six or seven home-improvement blogs, which gave me a bit more understanding, but no more confidence when it came to my ability to get the job done. And then I came across Ron Hazelton and his YouTube videos. Six minutes after watching the video below, I was off and running. The project took a bit longer than I had anticipated (I naively assumed I could get it done in an hour, but it took more like three), but thanks to Ron, I finished with an inflated chest and a happy wife.

Craig H. Jim- Good question. I'll shoot Mr. Hazelton an e-mail. - 08/31/2011
Jim H. But then what do you do when it comes apart when you weigh the tub down by filling it full of water? - 08/30/2011
