Know How: Repairing Drywall

It seems like this happens at least twice a year—one of the kids opens a door too hard and the handle punches a hole in the drywall, or a ball gets thrown that hits the dog, that knocks over a table that pushes a lamp that knocks over a picture, the corner of which knocks a hole in the wall. You know, that old chestnut.

I thought I was smart enough to handle a little do it yourself drywall hole repair. Throw some mud on it, paint it and you're good, right? Wrong. I was missing a step or two, which left little acne scars all over the walls of our house—not the kind of memories you want to cherish.

Repairing drywall the right way is pretty simple. Just watch the video below and follow the instructions. There are other methods—more complicated methods—especially for larger holes, but we hope those happen less frequently. It's not often, one hopes, that Chris Farley comes banging through the bedroom wall.

Many will probably know how to do this, but for new dads and new homeowners, this is the kind of repair you need to know how to do correctly and quickly. Trust me, it will come in handy more often than you think.
