Zombies vs. Vampires: The Great Debate

Zombies vs. Vampires: The Great Debate

In this country is a great divide. It is not classist, nor is it the widening schism separating us based on political affiliations. This ideological split transcends any conscious decision an American can make.

Since the explosion of the Twilight series and the unexpected popularity of The Walking Dead, America is seeking an answer to a question of even greater importance than the deficit or any supercommittee. In the vast realm of American escapism, it’s only natural we see a conflict of interests—and any conflict in the medium in which we suspend belief also allows us to suspend logic.

That point being established, I ask you the question: Which are better—vampires or zombies?

In a battle that would surely cause countless deaths, the zombies may very well be eradicated by vampires. Even if we considered the most “intelligent” of zombies, it’s difficult to imagine the undead staking an entombed bloodsucker through the heart in the torch-lit, musty halls of a catacomb. It’d probably turn out as something more akin to a war of attrition.

Completely disregarding a potential cross-over between the two, both modern zombie and vampire movies, television shows and stories offer us a view into our own psyches. It's tough to say which is "better," but let us venture into a strange, quite possibly false, glimpse into what zombies and vampires teach us about ourselves. And, consequentially, why Deputy Rick Grimes can teach us a hell of a lot more than Edward Cullen.

Erich B. I don't remember seeing vampires in Twilight. Just sparkly, brooding emos. - 01/28/2012
