Save Cash: Lose the Gym Membership

Save Cash: Lose the Gym Membership

They suck you in. You go into the gym for a "free week trial" and you walk out with a printed t-shirt and a hefty gym membership.

I've been there. Somehow the combination of treadmills and overly fit people guilt you into buying a membership, but do you know how much you could be saving by eliminating this expense? Most gym memberships cost anywhere from $30 to $70 per month, so imagine the savings over a year. The majority of people who are buying these memberships aren't even hitting the gym enough to get their money's worth. So, if you want to save some extra cash but still want to remain in shape, give working out at home a try.

There are plenty of home workout programs online that you can do that don't require any equipment at all. From running around your neighborhood to playing a few pick-up games of football with the kids, you can keep the weight off without spending a penny. For a long-term workout program, take a look at our Whole New Dad program—it will have you off the couch and running in a 5k in no time.

Michael S. $30-70 a month for gym membership? I only pay $20 here, go 4-5 times out of the week, for about 1.5-2 hours each visit. While you'll save money by foregoing the gym membership, the main problem that many people lack is discipline. Find a money-saving solution for that. - 10/09/2011
Robert H. Yeah! That $10/month for my Planet Fitness membership is going to break me. Not the $26 weekly pizza that I formerly purchased (Large, deep crust, sausage, peppers, mushroom, double cheese! nom nom nom!!!). I'm embarrassed to say how much weight I've lost since joining the gym. I take fewer meds now, I look so much better, I'm enjoying life again... How much is that worth a month? Thanks for the advice; but, I'll keep my gym membership! I'm - 10/04/2011
