Jonathan Fields on Business Uncertainty

Jonathan Fields is the author of "Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt into Brilliance." Uncertainty is a topic he's experienced first hand: After giving up a six-figure income as a lawyer to become a personal trainer, the married dad of an infant signed a lease to launch a yoga center in New York on September 10, 2011. Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh says the book can equip you "with the tools needed to take consistent action in the name of great work."
I met with Fields to learn more about how to use uncertainty as a force for positive change, rather than as a source of anxiety.
What's the biggest roadblock for people who want to pursue a dream and take a risk?
The fear of judgment, loss and unease when you have to move forward without knowing how it will end. One of the biggest determinants of success is the ability to adapt. But you have to be willing to be judged.
What's the best way to overcome the fear of being judged?
It's important to have the right people around you to help normalize the experience. Having the wrong people can crush you. Surrounding yourself with the right people can help you manage that judgment dynamic, and be less afraid of what happens when and if you fail.
I recommend people seek out mentors (people who've been there before and come out on the other side), heroes (people you may not meet but whose who career inspires you) and champions (a small group of people who you are close to in your personal life and who have faith in you). Having any one of these helps you deal with uncertainty and experience actions and decisions.
