4 Tips for Getting Out of the Office

2. Think about your Internet connection early. You might think that the last thing you'll want on vacation is an Internet connection, since no Internet means no active work for many guys. The truth is that you're an addict. You need to check your e-mail and catch up on what's going on at the office. Don't lie to yourself. Admitting it is the first step.

Make sure that your hotel has an active Internet connection, or make sure that your smartphone will connect. If this isn't possible, find a local cafe or other area that can keep you hooked in via Wi-Fi. Thinking about your Internet connection will prevent you from running all over town when you do need web access on your vacation.

3. Only check your e-mail once per day. You'll spend a lot more time worrying than working if you're regularly checking your e-mail the way that you do at the office. Remember that you're not expected to be on call 24 hours a day. Let your office know that you'll be checking your e-mail once each day -- no more, no less. Stick to this plan, no matter what. Leave an emergency number if you're in a high-power position at your office, but make it clear that you're not going to be accessible through e-mail very often, and that you're not to be contacted unless absolutely necessary.

4. Limit your work. For most guys, the most pressure to keep working during a vacation is going to be internal. Your office really won't be expecting you to do too much. Make a clean break and try to think about something else. Plan some activities during your vacation and make relaxation your main priority. Most guys only get a few weeks away from the office all year -- don't waste them on work.
