The Great Toilet Seat Debate

The Great Toilet Seat Debate

I guess the best way to approach this debate is head on. Okay, bad joke. I’ll refrain from using any more puns, as well as any bathroom humor. However, to keep the discussion from offending anyone, and to keep it shorter, I'll use "GTB" for “going to the bathroom.” Some people tend to be sensitive about this subject—mostly about whether the seat should be left up or down.

The toilet seat is one the biggest fronts in the Battle of the Sexes. It has started more fights than Don King.

Women definitely like it to be down after a male GTB event. Let's explore the reasons why and find some solutions for men who tend to leave it up.

What’s going through a guy’s mind here?

From a man’s perspective, I’ll say this: I put the toilet seat up when I GTB for sanitary reasons. I don’t want a single drop to touch the upper side of the toilet seat. If it does, it’s a drag for the next person, especially if that person is a woman.

So men who think this way believe they’re being chivalrous. But, as the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. She just wants it down.

At home, I never fail to close the seat and cover when I’m finished for two reasons:
1. If my girlfriend is there, I do it out of consideration for her. But unlike most guys, I’m a professional men’s housekeeping expert (and semi-famous author), so I am always aware of the issue.
2. For some reason, my dog thinks that toilet water is like Cristal champagne.

Away from home, the habit just carries over. But it’s easy for Average Joes to forget this simple move.

NEXT: Walk in her shoes…or whatever

Smith J. I prefer it up at all times except when being sat on (including flushing after a sit-down). This is for sanitary reasons. For one, occasionally there is some splashing during the flush. Also, I don't have any confidence in the next guy who comes along to lift the seat before the takes a leak. - 10/19/2011
Thomas M. Frank L. - Due to a typo on my part, the word "finish" should not have been in that sentence and it has now been removed. Thanks for your comment - ya can't get anything past you Canadians! - 09/23/2011
Frank L. "From a man’s perspective, I’ll say this: I put the toilet seat up when I finish GTB for sanitary reasons. I don’t want a single drop to touch the upper side of the toilet seat." Well, if you're putting the seat up AFTER you've finished, I think you're doing it wrong. But then, I'm not a "professional men's housekeeping expert," so I probably don't know what I'm talking about. That's probably the same reason I don't know what the phrase " the seat happens toup" means. PS: You might tell your webmaster that the Internet actually has international reach, and that not everyone is from the United States. (I chose New York in the drop-down menu because II love the city. In reality, however, I'm from Ontario. Canada. It's a little place north of you guys. - 09/22/2011
