The Game Changer: First Date

The Game Changer: First Date

Where I last left off, my hand was extended and I had introduced myself to the most beautiful woman I had seen in five years – maybe longer. I was awaiting an answer from her, and everything had gone into slow motion.

Well I got my answer. She said, “You have some asparagus…” pointing to her front right tooth, “Right here…” And then she smiled. I wasn’t sure if she was kidding or not, and I didn’t care.

“My name’s Dana” she said. Dana. It echoed in my head like organ music at church. Dana. Even the way she said it was religious. And before I knew it, we were sitting next to one another as my meal went untouched. I really don’t recall what happened in that 30 seconds between the introduction and the beginning of our first ‘date’. In retrospect, I could have been abducted by aliens, or time may have stopped. Whatever did happen, things had changed for the better.

So we sat there as patrons came and went and we got to know one another. She was a stylist, working on a local film production. She knew I was in from out of town because “No one that lives here, eats here.”

Over the next three days, we spent quite a bit of time together. Knowing that the window on my trip was closing fast we danced the delicate dance of keeping it casual, yet immersing ourselves in that amazing feeling that comes when you meet someone you really like. All things are wonderful at the beginning, and that includes relationships. Especially relationships. And this was no exception.

Turns out she was divorced, with a teenage daughter. She didn’t know what her next film gig was going to be and Christmas was around the corner. Yet none of this fazed her. She stayed in the moment. And I admired her for her ability to just take life as it comes, and relish every second of the day. Maybe it was the South, or her Southern upbringing. Whatever it was, it was intoxicating.

And then Friday came, and I was at the airport. With her. She had decided to take an hour off work and spend the last moments of my visit with me. Almost like we were a couple. And then I said it, “How would you like to come to Arizona. Like… Next week.”

She nodded and said yes. YES! I didn’t need a plane to fly anywhere. And even though I didn’t want to leave, I did. Knowing I would see her again in 10 days.

She’s on her way to me now. And I’ll let you now how it all goes. I have a great feeling about this one. It’s going to be a very Happy New Year.

Oh… And I did have asparagus in my teeth. Did I ever mention how much I love honesty?
