Save Cash: Homemade Peppermint Chocolate Bark

Save Cash: Homemade Peppermint Chocolate Bark

When you're younger, creating handmade Christmas gifts for your parents is acceptable, even endearing. Although the ornaments I made back in the day eventually have found their way to the back of the tree, where they can't be seen, I knew they meant something when I gave them. Granted, tying my shoes at that age was deemed an accomplishment too.

Now that I'm an adult, handcrafting an angel out of cotton balls for my parents would deserve an "are you serious" look. I can afford real presents, but sometimes when I'm wandering down store aisles and purchasing normal gifts, I still feel as if something is missing. Some of the gifts lack effort and personality. So this year, instead of shelling out more money on more gifts, I added a little something to each of my gifts. I substituted one gift with one handmade gift for my family.

Whether I was gifting a sweater or a new toy, I added handmade, custom chocolates to each gift. Sure it takes a bit more time, but making these chocolates saved me money from buying additional gifts, and I know it is something my family will really enjoy. So take a look at how to make these chocolates. Feel free to add your own toppings, making it whatever you like. When it comes to chocolate, it's really hard to screw it up.

What you'll need:

  • 24 oz. bag of chocolate bark coating
  • 1 cup dark chocolate baking chips
  • 5 oz. bag of walnut pieces
  • 1 York Peppermint Patty
  • 1 cup of M&Ms
  • 9" square aluminum disposable cake pan
