Signs of Aging

Signs of Aging

Aging is something that every guy deals with. Recognizing some of the changes you'll experience while you age will help you to prevent some problems now and help you to deal with others when they occur.

Hair

While some men will get to a ripe old age with a head of hair as full as it was during their teens, most of us will experience some hair loss: Two-thirds of men will be bald or balding by 60. The odds may not be on your side but you shouldn't worry about male pattern baldness. Unless it's a sudden result of stress or illness, male pattern baldness isn't typically associated with any medical disorders. Bald athletes and movie stars are often seen as sex symbols, and plenty of younger men opt for the clean, no-fuss look.

Bone and Muscle Mass

Increased fracture risk and weakness with age aren't just concerns for women. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), an estimated 12 million American men are at risk for osteoporosis. Although bone mineral density typically peaks at 30, you're not helpless to prevent gradual loss of bone and muscle.

Quit smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, both associated with poor bone health. Get plenty of calcium, abundant in dairy and leafy greens, as well as vitamin D, which is produced by direct contact with sunlight or found in fortified foods. A weight-training regimen, as well as any exercise in which your muscles work against gravity, is also a great way to maintain optimal bone health.

Vision

Age-related macular degeneration and cataracts are the major vision problems affecting millions of older Americans, according to the National Eye Institute. Aside from excessive exposure to UV light, smoking, high blood pressure and a poor diet are also risk factors for these conditions. Although genetics play a role, you can reduce your risk of vision loss by wearing sunglasses outdoors, especially around noon, and eating a healthy diet rich in omega-3s, as well as fruits and vegetables.

Hearing

Hearing loss is another problem that seems to be common among the elderly, but it can happen at any age. According to the Mayo Clinic, lifetime exposure to loud noises is a leading factor in the loss of hearing as you age. Don't listen to music or other entertainment at too high a volume, especially if you're using earbuds or headphones. If noise is part of your daily routine, make sure you use earplugs when you're on the job.

Sexual Health

Even if you don't have problems now, the barrage of commercials about erectile dysfunction (ED) are a constant reminder that men will deal with different degrees of impotence as they age. From difficulty getting and maintaining an erection to a declining interest in sex, you know that these are serious issues that not only affect your own happiness but can impact long-term relationships.

Smoking, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes are all contributing factors. A healthy diet and regular exercise should help prevent those underlying causes. If you already have ED, you can talk to your doctor about drugs such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, also known as PDE5 inhibitors.

It's tempting to deny that you're getting older or to ignore physical changes, but that won't keep you in good shape. As long as you stay committed to health and fitness, chances are you will have many happy years to look forward to.

Sienna Jae F. How many 40-something men in America are lying awake all night wondering if the sex they just enjoyed is their last? You believe the nonsense about Viagra-or-die after 50? Shame on you! Enough with these sad and fearful pledges to eat and exercise right in order to ward off the dreaded floppy. I am 66 and my lover is 74. We have sex at least 6 times a week -- and it is NOT geriatric sex. Unless there is a serious medical impediment, this rule applies: the man who believes he's able is able. Indefinitely. - 06/25/2011

Chris J. I just turned 38, and am experiencing many signs of aging, which I am NOT happy about. It seems to have happened all with in a year or two, also. I started gaining weight for the first time since a teenager, my physique is shit, my body aches (chronic lower back pain) I hate it. Younger girls look right through me, which is the worst. Don't get me wrong, I don't obsess over getting old, but when I do ponder it, it's not much fun. - 06/03/2011
Ron D. Another sign of aging: the birthday cards all have increasingly large numbers on them. Thank you, Captain Obvious, for the article. Fffft. - 05/05/2011
Michael P. I'll be 30 next month & the grey hairs are startin' to kick in on the sides of my head.I know we all can't stay young forever so we must enjoy our youths while we can in this lifetime. - 03/30/2011
Jon P. The author must be getting senile. He doesn't know what "Go back." means. ;-)~ - 11/08/2010
Bill M. I thought i was aging too fast at 38 years old and i want to stress to men out there that although we will 'return to dust' in the end, one should get on a significant exercise and strength regime. We are physical men living in a 'soft tissue' world. I am a computer person and the hardes part of my job is the six inches between my ears. It is the thinking that goes with all of our jobs that is hard.......but we are really not too many generations removed from a very very physical existance. Our bodies need to get into action in order to process emotion, fear, and to just be a man. Action is not watching TV. Action means being physical with exercise, activity and adventure. This is the balance a man's body craves. Thanks for this great site. Bill & www.billmurphy.tv - 10/24/2010
