Does That Brand Name on Your Shirt Really Matter?

Does That Brand Name on Your Shirt Really Matter?

I have a friend who wears only brand-name clothing, and he often looks dreadful despite the expense, because he lacks a sense of style. Of course, I'm not about to give him this critique. If he wants to spend his money, that's his prerogative. But when I see him out and about, I can't help but be reminded that style trumps brand name every time.

It is true that some brand-name clothing designers for men produce clothes that always seem to be in style. However, a brand in and of itself is a guarantee neither of style nor quality and certainly not comfort.

I prefer style over brand names because the primary objective in selecting clothing depends on comfort, convenience and appearance. Though brand name can be an added asset, the garment matters to me only when it meets my standard for style. After all, fashion is an extended part of a guy's personality, and his style of attire lies within the personal space of choice.

For me, just the style or the brand name isn't enough to make me buy something. When I buy a garment I look at the style, the material and the cost. The style may be great, but if the cost and the material don't go together then I'd rather buy what looks and feels comfortable. There's always a host of other options.

Quality Issues

Quality can be an issue with off-label clothes but not nearly as much as some folks think. Most of the brand-name and off-label clothes are made at the same place: overseas. The materials are usually very similar. For instance, when buying jeans you should look for good quality and comfortable denim and not at the label. Some high-priced jeans for men of $100 or more won't wear as well or look as good as a nice $25 pair.
