Dad Stuff: The Only Neckties You'll Ever Need

The necktie is something of a “classic” gift for your old man. Luckily, you’re not an old man.
Grant Harris, owner and chief style consultant of Image Granted, a Washington, D.C.-based image consulting company, has a simple-to-follow list (well, lists, really) for the only ties a guy actually needs.
It comes down to three things: patterns, fabrics and, of course, colors. So, in the interest of keeping this short and sweet, here are Harris’s three lists—with our comments—a guy needs to create a versatile, eclectic yet still highly fashionable necktie cache.
Who knows, maybe the ubiquitous Father’s Day tie could be something we can all start to look forward to.
Fabrics
• Silk – For the traditional.
• Silk Knit – For the casual.
• Cotton – For the summer/Southern gentleman.
• Wool – For the fall and winter/Lumberjacking gentleman.
• Grenadine – For the hell of it/James Bond.
Colors
• Navy – For the traditional.
• Black – For the formal.
• Gray – For modern stylish.
• Red – For the power player/politician.
• (Sometimes) Brown or Green - For the adventurous.
Patterns
• Solid – For the conservatives.
• Repp stripe – For the Ivy Leaguers.
• Geometric – For the walking art piece.
• Polka or pin dot (same link as above) – For the love of breaking monotony.
• Crest – For the Ivy League alum. (Take note, however, that some club or crest ties denote membership to a group or organization.)
