It's Not A Purse

Clothes may make the man, but the bag you carry might be even more important than what you wear. If you instinctively snicker at the thought of carrying around something like a "man purse," think again.
More than just a stylish accessory, men's bags are practical, functional ways to stay organized. From laptops to smartphones, from important documents to your wallet and keys, pockets just don't cut it anymore.
Today, men are realizing that a good bag can be helpful for success in this bustling world. No matter what line of work you're in, the right bag will give you quick access to the tools you need to get the job done.
Function over form?
While you could dump everything you need into a burlap sack, that's probably not the best idea. Since you'll be relying on your bag to haul around the daily essentials of modern life, functionality should be your first priority. Not all bags are made to handle the same job; it's important to choose one that's specifically designed to meet your needs. Bags may advertise special compartments and sections for items such as laptops, but it's always important to make sure that your own gear will fit nicely inside it.
What does your bag say about you?
Space and storage are essential but the right bag also has to have the right style. Think about what your bag will say about your level of professionalism and how well organized you are. Your bag will be a fundamental part of the impression you make on others, including your boss, co-workers and clients. You wouldn't be too impressed if your financial planner showed up for a meeting with a backpack. Likewise, you might think twice about a designer's vision if he pulled concepts out of a dusty old briefcase.
Types of Bags
It's easy to feel a little confused about the varieties of bags that are available. Luckily, bags used by men today can be divided into a few basic categories. Chances are one of these fundamental styles will meet your needs.
Messenger bags. These are deceptively casual looking and increasingly popular, especially on college campuses. The evolution of simple sacks used by bicycle couriers, messenger bags usually have a single large strap that is worn over one shoulder or across the chest. Since weight is distributed across your shoulder and chest, they're great for guys who need to carry things such as books, heavy binders and laptops.
Sling bags. Essentially a smaller version of the messenger bag, sling bags are perfect for technophiles who want a handy way to transport their gear. If you want complex compartments for documents, these bags probably aren't for you. On the other hand, a sling bag might be the best solution if all you want is something that can hold your tablet PC and a smartphone or camera.
Modern briefcases. The modern briefcase isn't the boxy thing your grandfather used to carry around. Today's briefcases are a stylish way to show that you're composed and sophisticated. Though there are a surprising number of variations, briefcases still offer ideal storage for paperwork.
Tote bags. Larger than a briefcase, tote bags also have slightly longer handles but lack the shoulder strap of messenger and sling bags. While the classic tote is an open canvas bag, versions designed for men are typically made of flexible leather and have a number of special pockets and dividers. Men's totes are perfect for businessmen who need a large bag with plenty of space but don't want the more casual looking messenger bag.
Holdalls. A holdall combines many of the features of the bags above while being versatile enough for almost any situation. Holdalls typically have handles and a shoulder strap, which is often detachable so that it can be adapted to heavier loads. Since holdalls are made for general use, they may not have the specific dividers and compartments of modern totes and briefcases. Nevertheless, a good holdall is useful in almost any line of work, and they're perfect for vacations and getaways, too.
