3 Step Guide to Summer Footwear

Casual

Two- and three-strap sandals. These sandals, fixed just below the ankle with one or two buckled straps, are better suited for casual backyard parties and days at the park. Birkenstock's cork-and-leather sandals are the best known, but don't be put off by the hippie stereotype. These sandals are perfect for guys who just can't feel comfortable with thongs between their toes, or who want a sandal that's a little more secure on the foot. These sandals are usually durable but may not be perfect beyond a deck, pavement or yard. If you're not into the buckles, consider a cross-strap sandal (two straps forming an X to hold your foot) as an excellent compromise.

Sports

Outdoor/hiking hybrids. Whether you're hiking, fishing, canoeing or kayaking, you need something that's tougher than any flip-flop. That's where hybrid sandals, specifically designed for outdoor sports, come in. Also known as water shoes, these are a cross between a sneaker and a sandal. On the one hand, they're light and open, allowing your feet to breathe. On the other hand, the front of the footwear is typically closed, with the sole a sneaker or hiking type. While they aren't the most sophisticated or stylish footwear, they're a great option when regular hiking boots and shoes would be too hot. KEEN makes some of the best examples of this kind of footwear.
